ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: Carla Patullo

Award-winning composer Carla Patullo, also known as White Widow, has created rich and diverse soundscapes for film and television productions that have won awards including a Daytime Emmy, a BAFTA, an Independent Spirit Award, and the GLAAD Media Award.

Last year, Skywalker Sound and the Sundance Institute selected Carla as a Composer Fellow for the 2018 Sundance Film Music and Sound Design Lab, during which she developed her haunting and vocally-driven score to Keola Racela’s horror comedy “Porno” premiering March 9 at SXSW. She is currently working on three documentary features: “Of Shadows,” about animation pioneer Lotte Reiniger; “Canta di Liberta,” about the renowned Italian singer Milva; and Gregorio Davila’s LGBTA doc “LA: A Queer History.” With sounds that ranges from raw industrial to lush orchestral, Carla’s other credits include the award-winning Sundance selection “Spa Night,” and the Outfest selections “Letter to Anita,” “Jeanne Cordova,” and “Choke.”

Carla also co-founded the production company Trick Studio, through which she directed and scored the award-winning animated short film, “Cinderella, a Shadow Ballet,” based on Reiniger’s original 1922 silent film “Aschenputtel.” Carla’s score won her a Global Music Award, and two Hollywood Music in Media Awards nominations for Best Original Score and Best Singer-Songwriter. Carla followed up her success by directing and scoring the critically-acclaimed short, “Lotte That Sihouette Girl,” which earned her a Music+Sound Award nomination for Best Short Film Score, won the American Documentary Film Festival award for Best U.S. Short, was one of the Hottest Shorts at Hot Docs, and shortlisted for a 2018 IDA Award.
In addition to composing, Carla is a prolific songwriter and has had over 100 song placements on Emmy-winning shows, such as “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” “The Young & the Restless,” “Skins,” and in dance performances by Maddie Ziegler on the show “Dance Moms.” Furthermore, Carla has toured internationally as a solo performer and with her band. Her vocals can be heard on the Microsoft video game “Project Spark,” and the PBS show “Craft in America.” She was also the musical director for actress/comedian Sandra Bernhard’s “I Love Being Me, Don’t You” album tour, which included performances with Liza Minnelli, Rufus Wainwright, and Justin Vivian Bond.

SUNDANCE SERIES: GRAHAM REYNOLDS

Today we bring you Composer Graham Reynolds. Graham joins the show to discuss his work on this years Sundance hit, “Sister Aimee” and his plethora of work with Richard Linklater including one of our host’s favorites, “A Scanner Darkly.” Have a listen and enjoy! (See below for Graham’s bio).

With over 50 film and television music credits, renowned composer, bandleader and improviser Graham Reynolds creates, performs, and records music for a wide range of disciplines including film, theater, dance, rock clubs and concert halls. Reynolds most recently scored director duo Samantha Buck and Marie Schlingmann’s “Sister Aimee,” starring Anna Margaret Hollyman, Julia White and Michael Mosley, premiering January 26th at Sundance.

A frequent collaborator with Oscar-nominated director Richard Linklater, Reynolds just wrapped up “Where’d You Go, Bernadette,” starring Cate Blanchett and Kristen Wiig, in theaters later this year. He composed and released soundtracks to Linklater’s “Last Flag Flying,” starring Steve Carell, Bryan Cranston, and Laurence Fishburne; Sony Pictures Classics’ “Before Midnight,” starring Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy, “Bernie,” starring Jack Black, and the cult classic “A Scanner Darkly,” starring Robert Downey Jr., named ‘Best Soundtrack of the Decade’ by Cinema Retro Magazine. Reynolds also scored the comedy “All Is Bright,” starring Paul Giamatti and Paul Rudd, and HBO’s documentary “The Diplomat.”

In addition to film, Reynolds has worked on several television series including the Rooster Teeth Sci-Fi mystery show “Day 5,” PBS documentary series “Stand Up Planet,” and the Hulu comedy series “Up to Speed.”  His original work can also be heard in advertisements starting Jennifer Lawrence and Idris Elba.

Beyond these mediums, Reynolds has released a multitude of critically-acclaimed albums including a twelve album set on Innova Recordings in early 2017.  His Creative Capital Award winning bilingual opera Pancho Villa from a Safe Distance just saw its New York City premiere at Prototype Festival and will continue to tour, and the next full length collaboration with Ballet Austin, “Grimm Tales,” opens at the end of March.  As Artistic Director of the non-profit Golden Hornet, he recently curated and released The Sound of Science (along with virtuoso cellist Jeffrey Zeigler) on National Sawdust Tracks. The album bridges the musical and scientific worlds, celebrating their shared culture of inquiry, and was named an ‘Album You Need to Hear Now’ by NPR.  Reynolds is also a company member of the internationally acclaimed Rude Mechs theater collective and resident composer of Austin’s Salvage Vanguard Theater and Forklift Danceworks.

Graham’s additional accolades include an Independent Music Award, two Frederick R. Loewe Music Theatre Awards, ten Austin Critics Table Awards, the John Bustin Award, and multiple Austin Chronicle Best Composer wins.

Reynolds currently resides in Austin, Texas and works primarily in his newly built Red House Studio.

SUNDANCE SERIES: ROGER SUEN

For the first episode of our Sundance Series, we talk to Composer Roger Suen about his work on last year’s Sundance hit, “Gook,” and of course, the film he has premiering this year, “Ms Purple.” Have a listen and enjoy! (See below for Roger’s bio).

Composer extraordinaire Roger Suen has lent his expertise to numerous feature films, television series and documentaries. Best known for his critically acclaimed score for the 2017 Sundance award-winning film, Gook, Film Music Magazine said Roger’s score waspowerfully unexpected, musical color” and included it in their Top 10 Scores of 2017. Roger recently reunited with Gook director Justin Chon to score the modern Asian-American drama film Ms. Purple, premiering Jan. 26 at the Sundance Film Festival, and produced by MACRO, the production company behind critically-acclaimed films such as Mudbound, Roman J. Israel, Esq., and Fences.

Roger’s diverse music portfolio includes scoring additional music for Guillermo Del Toro’s four-time Oscar winning film The Shape of Water, 21st Century Fox’s science fiction thriller The Darkest Minds, starring Amandla Stenberg and Mandy Moore, Netflix’s five-time Emmy-nominated series Daredevil, starring Charlie Cox and Deborah Ann Woll, and Marvel’s Emmy-nominated series The Defenders, starring Cox, Krysten Ritter and Mike Colter.

Through his mastery of orchestral composition and modern electronica, he has created heart-pounding additional music for blockbuster films such as Oscar-nominated X-Men: Days of Future Past, X-Men: Apocalypse, Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials and Maze Runner: The Death Cure.

Roger’s musical versatility is even more apparent in Sony Pictures’ animated film The Star and Warner Bros’ comedy The Nice Guys, starring Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling, as he seamlessly navigates groovy funk to Wagnerian orchestral drama without missing a beat.

A Southern California native, Roger studied music composition as an undergraduate then graduate student at UCLA and CSUN. He currently resides in Los Angeles.
